  "And there was Bill Luckenbaugh...
who had more pins than any wrestler in ESU history.
One night in Wilkes-Barre, Lucky took the mat against
Wilkes' College top wrestler - NCAA DIII Champ Mike Lee.
The match started, and the PA announcer was saying...
"This is the match you have been waiting for — it's Bill Lucken-"¦.."
Suddenly, he sputtered and stopped, Lucky had already sunk in
an arm-bar and had his opponent headed for a fall."

East Stroudsburg Wrestling Squad Leans
Heavily on Five Former York Grapplers
Four former West York Area High School mat stars and one from Central York are expected
to play a big part as the East Stroudsburg State College wrestling team prepares to open
its 1973-74 season tonight at Montclair State (NJ) College.  All-American Bill Luckenbaugh,
a senior, and PIAA State Champion in his final year at West York, will be in the lineup as
the Warriors launch their season with a bang, taking part in the annual Coast Guard
Invitational Tournament at New London, Connecticut Friday and Saturday following
tonight's lid-lifter.  Other West Yorkers on the squad are sophomore Mike Stambaugh,
and a pair of freshmen, heavyweight Don Lehman and 126-pounder Keith Lichty.
Junior John Luckenbaugh is the former Central star on the team.  The latter wrestles
at 158 pounds.  Coach Clyde 'Red' Witman's team will be counting heavily on Bill
Luckenbaugh, who was undefeated in 21 matches last season with one tie.  He pinned
17 of his opponents for a school record and now has 29 career pins.  The senior captain
will wrestle at either 150 or 158 pounds.  He was chosen as the outstanding wrestler
in last year's Coast Guard Invitational after winning the 150-pound title.  The only other
lettermen in the starting lineup will be Stambaugh at 177 pounds, junior Fred Swanson
at 190 and junior Gene Ulrich at 142.  Stambaugh was 7-2 in his freshman season, while
Swanson was 13-7-1 with six pins and Ulrich was 10-10-1.  Newcomers will handle the
assignments at all other weight classes with the exception of 167 pounds where junior
Carl Seitz wrestled two matches last season.  "We will not have the balance or experience
we'd like to have during the first semester.  We're hoping that we can come on strongly
later in the season as we did last year," Witman said.  The Warriors won seven of their
last eight matches last season to finish with a 14-6-1 record, tying the school victory
record.  The highlights were a pair of consecutive one-point wins over Wilkes College and
Bloomsburg.  The team will be bolstered in the second semester by the addition of junior
Bob Stetler, a transfer student and former East Stroudsburg Open Wrestling Tournament
champion at 167 pounds, and Phil Conlin at 150.  The Warriors strength should be in the
middle of the lineup with Luckenbaugh and the last three weight classes with Lehman
joining Stambaugh, Swanson, and sophomore Gib Bastian.  Freshmen will be used at the
lower three weights, Billy Cuff, a New Jersey State Champion is set at 118.  Lichty will
go at 126 with Gary Kessel at 134.  Ulrich, Luckenbaugh and sophomore Mike Sitler will
take care of the middle weights backed up by freshman Mel Riddick of Allentown, Pa.

Ex-Bulldog Wrestlers Star Against Lock Haven College
York Daily Record 12/17/73:
A quartet of former West York High School wrestlers led East Stroudsburg
to a 29-20 victory over Lock Haven State College in a Pennsylvania State Conference dual meet Saturday at Lock Haven.
It was the first victory for East Stroudsburg over Lock Haven in seven years as the Warriors pushed their dual meet record
for the year to 5-3. Stealing the spotlight from his upper class teammates was freshman Keith Lichty.
The youngster was credited with the key victory in the match when he pinned defending PA State Conference champion,
Rob Johnson, in 3:14 of their 126 pound match.  It was only the second victory of the season for Lichty who is now 2-5-1.
Bill Luckenbaugh
, the former PIAA State Champion who earned All-American honors last year,
gained his eighth victory of the season with a pin over Don Eichenlaub in 4:27 of their 158 pound class.
Eichenlaub, like Johnson, is the defending PA Conference wrestling champion. The victory boosted
Luckenbaugh's brilliant college record to 44 victories, including 39 pins, four losses, and one tie.
Luckenbaugh, highly regarded as a candidate for National honors, was injured in a first round match of last year's
PA Conference championship tournament and was forced to retire the rest of the season.
Also winning Saturday for East Stroudsburg was Mike Stambaugh, a former West Yorker and now a sophomore,
who scored with a 9-8 triumph over Ron McMurray in the 177 pound class.  Freshman Don Lehman, the fourth Bulldog
member of the Warriors squad, gained a tie with Lock Haven's Jim Schuster at 6-6 in the heavyweight class.
Mike Stambaugh is now 6-2 on the season and Don Lehman is 5-2-1.

Luckenbaugh, Stetler Win PC Titles
by John Aigeldinger

1974 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
College Wrestling Championships

March 1, 1974 - Bill Luckenbaugh and Bob Stetler, two of  the Warriors best grapplers joined the ranks of
some of the greatest college wrestlers in the history of the sport by becoming Pennsylvania Conference
wrestling champs last Saturday night.  Luckenbaugh is a former PIAA champion and a West York (PA) grad.
"Lucky" took the 150 pound title in the 31st annual conference championship with a 5-4 victory over Mike
Waller of Slippery Rock.  Stetler, a junior, was the 158 pound winner beating Angelo Natoli of Slippery
Rock, 2-0.  Both wrestlers were sporting 15-0 regular season records going into the PSAC finals.
The Warriors had two other place winners in Don Lehman, third at 190 pounds and Phil Conlin, fourth at
142lbs.  Both are freshman. Lehman is a West York (PA) graduate and Conlin graduated from Warwick (PA).
ESSC placed fourth among the 13 conference schools, a vast improvement over last year's twelfth place
showing.  Luckenbaugh won his first PC title after being frustrated in two previous attempts.  He was
second to national champion Stan Dziedzic of Slippery Rock in 1971 and he was injured and forced to
default last year.  However Lucky was not to be denied his title this year as he pinned Bill Davis of
Clarion in 1:42 of the semi-finals and came back in the finals, building up close to three minutes of
riding time for the difference in his win over Waller.  Stetler edged Don Eichenlaub, the 150 pound
champion in 1973, 5-3, on a takedown with 30 seconds remaining.  He controlled his final round
match much more than the score indicated.  He rode Natoli the entire second period and escaped early
in the third and forced the action the rest of the way. Stetler is a former East Stroudsburg Open winner.
Luckenbaugh, Stetler and Lehman will compete in the NCAA Division Two Wrestling Championships
Friday and Saturday at Cal State University - Fullerton, California.

Herr, Luckenbaugh State Mat Champions
Tom Herr and Bill Luckenbaugh
are one step closer to national wrestling championships today.
Both York grappling products leaped into the spotlight Saturday with victories in the
Pennsylvania Conference Championships at Slippery Rock State College.  Herr, defending NAIA

over Clarion's Chuck Coryea while East Stroudsburg's Luckenbaugh nipped Slippery Rock's

finished the season with a 26-3 mark and will defend his national title at River Falls, Wisconsin
March 7, 8, and 9.  Luckenbaugh, a former West York standout, scored a pair of pins in

NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa -
Newly-crowned Pennsylvania Conference wrestling champions Bill Luckenbaugh (150)
and Bob Stetler (158) will compete in the NCAA Division Two Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday
in Fullerton, California.  Don Lehman (190), a third place conference finisher, also will be entered in the NCAA
tourney.  Lehman and Luckenbaugh are graduates of West York High School.  Luckenbaugh should be one
of the favorites at 150 pounds based on his 22-0 season record which includes 16 pinsStetler is 10-1
with five pins while Lehman is 15-7-2 with three pins.  "All three have the capabilities to do well, but then
a lot of wrestlers have the capabilities." said Coach Clyde 'Red' Witman.  "Now is when experience, desire
and determination come into play."  This will be Luckenbaugh's second NCAA tournament.  As a sophomore
in 1971, he wrestled in the NCAA College Division Tournament in Fargo, S.D., winning his first two matches
on pins before losing to Tom Minkel of Central Michigan, 5-4.  Luckenbaugh gained revenge for that loss
the following year by beating Minkel, 11-1, in the finals of the APO East Stroudsburg Open Tournament.
The senior sat out the 1971-72 season and was injured and unable to compete at last year's tourney.
"Bill is one of the best pinners I've ever seen anywhere.  We obviously consider him one of the top
wrestlers in the nation and we're counting on his performance in the NCAA tournament to prove this,"

Witman stated.  Stetler just became eligible to compete for East Stroudsburg at the start of the 2nd
semester.  The junior from Stroudsburg is a transfer from Huron, S.D. College where he wrestled for
two years.  Lehman is a freshman.  He competed at heavyweight during most of the dual-meet
season, but dropped down to 190 pounds for the Pennsylvania Conference Championships last week.
East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg are the only Pennsylvania Conference schools which will compete
in the Division Two tournament.  The top two finishers in each weight class will qualify for the NCAA
Division One Wrestling Championships March 14-16 at Iowa State University.

Lucky Gets Crown And Trophy
Senior wrestler Bill Luckenbaugh proved his grappling powers again this weekend breezing through the NCAA College
Division II wrestling championships at Fullerton, California.  Lucky, top seeded at 150 pounds, pinned Roger Warner
of Cal Poly San Louis Obispo in 3:35 of the final round match.  This was his fourth pin in five tournament matches
and it enabled him to win a trophy for the most pins.  He also was second to Bloomsburg's Floyd Hitchcock in the
outstanding wrestler balloting.
Bob Stetler, another "Warrior Wonder," took third in the 158 pound class winning
four consolation matches.  His biggest win came in a 9-2 thrashing of Mike Turnbull of the University of Akron,
who earlier had eliminated him from the championship competition.  Turnbull decisioned Stetler 5-4 when his
trick knee went out on him.  Coach "Red" Witman felt that if it had not been for the injury he could have
conceivably gone on to win the title.  Don Lehman, only a freshman at 190 pounds, won one match in the
championship round
, defeating a Northern Iowa grappler 3-2, and then fell to Mankato State's Kurt Kuehl
by fall (4:56) in the quarterfinal match.  Lehman won one consolation match on Saturday before losing to Kuehl
for a second time.  With only Lucky, Stetler and Lehman competing, the trio managed to score high enough
for seventh place out of forty colleges.  Winning the final round enabled Lucky to go on to the NCAA Division I
championships March 14-16 at Iowa State.  ESSC's only other NCAA champion was Rich Schumacher, who
won the heavyweight college division title in 1970.

"Lucky" Advances to...
NCAA Division One Wrestling Tournament!!

Undefeated Bill Luckenbaugh will represent East Stroudsburg in the NCAA Division One Wrestling Championships
beginning Thursday, March 14 at Iowa State University.  Luckenbaugh is expected to be seeded high in the 150lb. class
based on his 27-0 record and 20 pins.  The senior from West York, PA won the NCAA Division II title, pinning four
of his five opponents.  He pinned Roger Warner of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo @ 3:35 of the finals.  "Lucky" also won
individual honors in the Coast Guard Invitational and the Pennsylvania Conference Championships.  He was 15-0 in dual
matches with 12 pins.  Among his victims this year were Mike Waller of Slippery Rock, a 3rd team All-American
and Mike Lee of Wilkes, the NCAA Division Three Champion.  Coach Clyde "Red" Witman is hoping Lucky will get a
second or third seed in the 36-man field to defending champion Jarrett Hubbard of Michigan, who is also undefeated.
"Bill is good enough to win the national title, but so are six-seven other wrestlers. Remember, every wrestler entered
has had to qualify by winning either a league, regional, or national tournament," indicated Witman.  "I'd say Bill's
chances are better than most because he is a pinner.  Sometimes a pinner can deck people who may prove better than
they are if the match comes down to a decision." the coach added. Witman is in his 12th season as ESSC head coach.
This will be Luckenbaugh's first appearance in the NCAA Division One Tournament, formerly called the University Division.
Lucky didn't qualify as a sophomore and last year he was injured and unable to enter NCAA competition.  The Warriors
just missed having a second national qualifier as junior Bob Stetler placed third in the NCAA Division II Championships
at 158lbs., where only the finalists qualified.  Stetler won five matches and only lost one.  He was defeated by Mike
Turnbull of Akron in the second round when he suffered a knee injury.  He came back to trounce Turnbull in the
consolation finals.  Don Lehman, an ESSC freshman, also competed in the NCAA Division II tournament at 190lbs.
Lehman scored two victories, losing in the quarterfinals of the championship event.  Lehman narrowly missed placing
for All-American status, winning a 6-5 decision over Seattle's Rich Maras and then losing to Minnesota State's
(Mankato) All-American Kurt Kuehl, 9-6, in his last consolation bout.
The 1974 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship Tournament was
held at California State University at Fullerton in Orange County, California.

Bill Luckenbaugh of East Stroudsburg State College...
was the "2nd seed" at the 1974 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Iowa City.
Bill won his first 2 matches by fall, but a severe knee injury suffered at practice
the prior week hindered his progress in what would have been, a sure All-American medal.
Bill won the NCAA DII wrestling crown the week before to qualify for the DI tournament in Iowa City.

Results from the 1974 Quad Meet
@ Lehigh University's Grace Hall in Bethlehem PA

POCONO RECORD ARCHIVES
November 30, 1974

Key standoff by Lehman aids ESSC matmen, 18-17
Bethlehem, Pa:  With a Grace Hall crowd of more than 2,500 fans spurring him on, Don Lehman held 315-pound
Bill Ellis,
a 1973 New Jersey State Wrestling Champion for Toms River North HS and current University of Maryland
sophomore grappler, to a 0-0 standoff in the heavyweight finale to give East Stroudsburg State College
an 18-17 wrestling victory over the University of Maryland Terrapins Friday night.

Lehigh had already finished its match against Southern Illinois on an adjacent mat, winning easily, 35-3,
in the quadrangular competition.  The huge Grace Hall throng turned its attention to the other mat where the
ESSC Warriors were trying to hold a one-point lead.  Lehman, outweighed by more than 120 pounds,
became the crowd's favorite and they cheered him on as if he were a Lehigh wrestler.
The ESSC sophomore rode out the entire second
period, tying up Ellis' legs and thus negating the Maryland
youngster's beef and prominent belly.  In the third period, Ellis laid on top of Lehman but couldn't turn him over
and the tie gave the Warriors their second victory of the season against one defeat.
The winning margin was provided by a pin by Bob Stetler at 158, a superior decision by freshman
Jody McMullen
at 134 and decisions by Gary Kessel at 150 and Carl Seitz at 167.
Kessel, undefeated in three matches, had the key match, stunning Maryland's Tyrone Neal, 6-4,
with late takedowns in the second and third periods.  He kept the powerful Neal from tying
him up and shot in on a pair of double leg takedowns.  Neal was also undefeated and had won the 158lb. title in the
East Stroudsburg Open Wrestling Tournament, finishing second in the balloting for the outstanding wrestler award.
After losing a pair of one-point decisions at 118 and 126 pounds, McMullen, a graduate of Dieruff High School,
started the Warriors off by trouncing Bill Schoy, 17-2.  He had four two-point near falls, three in the third period.
Still behind 9-7, Stetler, the team captain, led his teammates by example in decking Steve Hogg in 4:17.
It was the Stroudsburg senior's first match at his normal wrestling weight of 158 pounds and was his first pin.
Stetler was ahead, 2-1 in the second period and coolly worked Hogg in position for the pin with a figure four.
The teams will trade opponents today.
ESSC will meet host Lehigh at 2:30pm and Southern Illinois at 8:00pm in Grace Hall.
